Motor Racing:

During the nineteen eighties I regularly attended motor racing circuits such as Donington Park, Mallory Park, Silverstone, Oulton Park and Brands Hatch and taking in The Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder on three occasions.

Although a big motor racing fan, then as now, part of the enjoyment for me was that I looked on a day at the races as a photographic assignment, particularly for the Grand Prix F1 meetings - taking photos of the rich and famous - action photos and all that. Armed with my camera with long lens, though never quite long enough, particularly when you are set back behind a crash barrier, sometimes peering through catch fencing, or on one memorable occasion, my view being blocked by some German waving a super-8 movie camera trying to get his best shots of his beloved Bee-Em-Vay (BMW).

The sheer speed of the sport makes this type of photography difficult, standing on the Hangar straight at Silverstone trying to take a photo of an F1 car travelling over 200 mph is not the easiest thing to do. By practice panning and timing myself to the movement of the car I could often capture an image, only to be disappointed when later viewing the results to find the camera was slightly out of focus. Hopefully though, I did managed to get one or two half decent photos. These were all taken on 35mm film and have been scanned in. The black and white photographs are what I processed myself in the days when I did my own developing and printing (scrambling around in the dark, developer, stop bath, fixer) - Thank goodness for digital photography

Thanks for the recent interest in this page from Alain Sam-Lai (from www.eliodeangelis.com) who has requested photos of Elio De Angelis. The three photos below are of Elio at Silverstone 1981, Zolder (Belgium) 1982 and Silverstone 1985. Sadly, Elio was killed during testing at the Paul Ricard circuit at Le Castellet in 1986. I have been corresponding with Oskar Schuler, Switzerland who has asked me if he could use one of my motor racing photos. Oskar is an Alain Prost fan and is the webmaster for www.prostfan.com.

Alan Jones - Williams, Belgian Grand Prix - Zolder 1981
Alain Prost - Renault, Belgian Grand Prix - Zolder 1981
Nigel Mansell - Lotus, Belgian Grand Prix - Zolder 1981
The late Giles Villeneuve - Ferrari, British Grand Prix - Silverstone (Hanger Straight) 1981
Nelson Piquet - Brabham, Belgian Grand Prix - Zolder 1981
Many of the British fans supported Australian, Alan Jones in the British Williams at the Silverstone, British Grand Prix 1981 and the rivalry with French driver Alain Prost in the Renault was very intense. Although it was Ulsterman John Watson in the McClaren who went on to win the race by overtaking Prost's team-mate, Rene Arnoux late in the race.
John Watson - McClaren, Silverstone '81
Keke Rosberg - Williams, British Grand Prix 1985. Rosberg set the fastest ever lap of an F1 car around Silverstone in practice for the '85 race at an average of just over 150mph. As the circuit was modified soon after, this record still stands today.
Nikki Lauda - McClaren, British Grand Prix 1985.
It always seemed a ridiculous rule that in some countries cigarette advertising was banned on the cars and drivers' overalls (note that word Marlboro has been removed from the chevron on Mechelle Alboreto's back and on Niki Lauda's McClaren above). But the words Marlboro British Grand Prix were allowed everywhere else. Alain Prost's chats to the Ferrari driver on the victory rostrum following his win in the British Grand Prix 1985.
Gerhard Berger - Bennetton, Brand Hatch '86. This is the last British Grand Prix to be held at Brands Hatch in 1986. Berger retires from the race and has a long walk to the pits.

Nigel Mansell overtakes Piquet in the latter stages of the '86 British Grand Prix after a long battle for the lead. The following years' race at Silverstone was very similar with the same outcome. Although Mansell just missed out on the World Championship to Prost in '86 following his spectacular tyre blowout in Australia, the Williams team as a whole dominated this period and Piquet went on to take the '87 Championship.
The late and great Ayrton Senna - Lotus, British Grand Prix '86
Fun and games at Druids Hairpin, Brands Hatch - Formula Ford Festival '81.

Ayrton Senna dominated the Works Formula Ford Championship of 1981 only to not show for that years' annual Formula Ford Festival October 1981.

There was a large influx of South American's in Formula Ford in the early eighty's including Senna. However, the Espanic looking driver on the right of this drivers' conference is Ireland's Tommy Byrne who later went on to drive in F1 for Brabham.

Sterling Moss made a brief comeback in this period to compete in saloon car racing, but is seen here at the wheel (helmet off) in a demonstration drive of a Vanwall which he drove originally in the fifties.
Probably one the best corners to watch motor racing - Paddock Hill Bend - Brands Hatch, Formula Ford Festival '81.
