Recently, I went to see a tribute band simply called Pink Floyd 2 at the Lryic Theatre, Dinnington near Sheffield who served up a great night of entertainment playing classic tracks from various eras of Pink Floyd such as from the Meddle album, One of These Days and an excellent version of Echoes through to more recent material Coming Back to Life from The Division Bell album. There are a number of Pink Floyd tribute bands on the go at the moment many are named using play on words of the original band’s name or sometimes song titles. Examples are Pig Floyd, Pink Fraud, Shrink Floyd, Floydian Slip, Time To Breathe to name but a few. (See my review of Pink Fraud at the Boardwalk). Floyd 2 is a North East based tribute band that appears to have a changing personnel line up but the driving force behind the band is the aptly named guitarist Chris Goodband who generates a close resemblance to the Dave Gilmour sound. The set begins with the opening number from The Wall album In the Flesh and is played behind a wall-designed curtain at the front of the stage. The number ends with a crescendo as the wall curtain disappears and some pyrotechnics light up the venue. The set continues with Shine On You Crazy Diamond followed by a medley from The Dark Side of the Moon which brings the first half to close. Highlights from the second half include Echoes, One of These Days, Wish You Were Here and Another Brick in The Wall with the set closing with the customary Floyd finale pieces Run Like Hell and Comfortably Numb. Although the turnout for the show at this great little venue was a little disappointing, less than a hundred people enjoyed a great night of classic live Floyd music.
