The Alarm The Boardwalk, Sheffield 23/07/04 |

| Since I saw The Alarm just over a year ago (see review below) the band hit the headlines in February of this year when they found their way into the top 30 single charts by masquerading themselves under name of The Poppyfields and filmed a video using images of a teenage band called The Wayriders. The Boardwalk, Sheffield 23/07/04 The Alarm are currently on tour promoting their long awaited new album "In The Poppy Fields" The controversy of their single success has brought the band to prominence and their current tour has seen them on the supporting bill to Simple Minds at the recent Guildford Festival. On a warm Friday July evening Sheffield's City Centre was unusually very quiet due to the lack of public transport due a bus strike but the small venue of The Boardwalk was packed with loyal fans. The band played a selection from their eighties back catalogue that included Sixty Eight Guns, Where Were You Hiding, Blaze of Glory, Absolute Reality, Rescue Me and a medley of Spirit of '76 and Walk Forever By My Side. The songs from the new album came over very well and included Coming Home, Closer, 45rpm, The Drunk and The Disorderly and Right Back Where I Started From. The one disappointment for me was that the set failed to include the song New Home New Life which is possibly the best track on the new album. Momentum seems to be gaining for the popularity of the band and although it is highly unlikely that they would find themselves in the top 30 singles chart under their own name the quality and strength of the new album combined with the Alarm's live performance should see the band's revival continue.
