Still Growing Up Tour

It's eleven years since Peter Gabriel's last visit to Sheffield's Hallam FM Arena and his long awaited return in his "Still Growing Up" tour didn't disappoint the loyal fans, many of whom, probably like myself who have followed Gabriel firstly as Genesis front man and through his solo career that has spanned almost thirty years since his departure from Genesis in 1975.

Gabriel still has the ability to create new innovative and original material, which is probably helped by the fact that his 2002 album entitled "Up" was his first release in ten years. The show itself was performed in the round with a seven piece band that included himself and his daughter Melanie who performed a selection of songs from his recent recording and a selection of his greatest hits that included Sledgehammer, Red Rain and a slightly more up tempo version of Salisbury Hill which Gabriel performed riding around the circular stage on a bicycle while the rest of the stage rotated in the opposite direction. Other songs included "Upside Down, Downside Up" which Peter and Melanie sung suspended upside-down and appeared to be walking on the ceiling of the stage set. The show also included a number of songs from his 1992 album "Us" including Washing of the Water, Come Talk to Me, Digging in the Dirt and the excellent Secret World. In between numbers Peter talked to the audience in his familiar monotone speaking voice which combines with his slightly reserved demeanour and his tongue in check humour.

The two highlights of the set were two numbers from the recent "Up" album. Growing Up which Gabriel performed inside a huge transparent ball that he controlled by bouncing and rolling around the stage to the rhythm of the song almost like a laboratory mouse running around a wheel in a cage. The atmospheric Signal To Noise was the climax of the show followed by two encores that included the song In Your Eyes.

Despite his age (54) his greying balding looks and a slightly rotund frame, Gabriel performed the set with great energy combined with his sense of theatre which is a throwback to his days with Genesis. His musical content is grown up stuff but the great fun that Peter has on stage particularly with his huge transparent ball shows that he is definitely still growing up.
