Blades ReUnited

In the last few years I have met up with an old friend and neighbour Alan Palfreyman. Alan was a close friend to my oldest brother Mark and I have happy childhood memories when we all used to fill our time on those long summer evenings playing football 'til dusk at the local recreation ground. ("kids in the park, jumpers for goalposts, isn't it").

As teenagers we grew enjoying similar types of music - Deep Purple, Genesis, Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd etc. and we would sometimes take in gigs at the City Hall. But football was always high on the agenda, as it is today, following the Blades during the late sixties, early seventies and to a memorable promotion to the old First Division in 1971.

Having lost touch for twenty-five years or more my brother Dennis and I have met up with Alan through the Internet. Alan is now working for News International (The Sun/News of the World). The Sun is a regular sponsor to Sheffield United and Alan is often involved with corporate hospitality on match days.

Alan has been kind enough to invite Dennis and I along to enjoy the Sun's hospitality on match days on a number of occasions. It's been great to get together with Alan after all these years while rekindling are common interest in the Blades. Having been a supporter of United for many years it is also good to have the opportunity to go behind the scenes, into the dressing rooms, meet players past and present and take a seat in the Directors Box.

Blades Legends

Immediately below are photos from the Blackburn game when I was privileged to meet two Blades legends Tony Agana and Brian Deane. The two strikers forged a prolific goal scoring partnership in the late eighties and early nineties helping United to two consecutive promotions from the old Division Three to Division One. From left to right:-

Tony Agana - 1988-91: Tony, signed by Dave Bassett from Watford, was a striker with exceptional pace who formed a prolific partnership with Brian Deane scoring at hat full of goals and helping the Blades to two consecutive promotions from the old third division to the top flight only to be controversially sold to Notts County just days before the visit of Wednesday to the Lane in 1991.

Tony Currie - 1968-76: T.C. was also signed from Watford and sold to Leeds, but during his time at the Lane was an entertaining midfielder with an eye for goal who help the Blades to promotion to the First Division in 1971. He gained caps for England playing in that memorable match against Poland when England missed out on World Cup qualification. Tony didn't figure much with England under Don Revie but he came back into favour when Ron Greenwood took over. T.C. enjoyed a run in the side scoring a spectacular goal in the Home Internationals against Wales in 1978. Towards the end of his career he went on to play for Q.P.R. gaining an F.A. Cup runners-up medal in 1982. Tony is now back with Sheffield United and is involved with the clubs community programme.

Jon Harley

Jon Harley - 2002:- Jon at the time of this photograph was on loan from Fulham. After showing a lot of promise with Chelsea he was tranfered to neighbours Fulham but he was unable to gain a regular place in the Premiership side and was looking to re-launch his career elsewere.

Mick Jones 1962 - 67: Mick was a strong centre forward who gained brief international recognition while at United only to be sold to Leeds for £100.000 and was another of the many who ended up taking the short journey up the M1 to our Yorkshire rivals. Mick played in the successful Leeds side that won cups and championships in the seventies. For more from me and details on my years following the Blades - Go to: Blades - Down the years
