Playa de las Americas / Los Cristianos

The resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos have expanded so much in recent years that they have merged into one. Both resorts are very commercialised though Los Cristianos is the quieter of the two and has the best beaches. The sunset photographs show the Hotel Sol Tenerife in the foreground and on the horizon you can make out the small island of La Gomera that lies just off the coast of Tenerife. This small island was Christopher Columbus's last stop on Spanish soil before he went on to discover America in 1492. The photo of the west coast of Tenerife shows the peak of Mount Teide poking through the clouds.

Los Gigantes

The cliffs of Los Gigantes (The Giants) are a popular destination for many of the boats trips that run along the west coast of the island. Trips run a mile or two out to sea where you can see small whales and dolphins in the wild. The dolphins in particular are happy to entertain the tourists as they swim alongside the boats and occasionally jump out of the water. A swim in one of the little coves in the warm waters under the spectacular cliffs of Los Gigantes is a must followed by lunch on the boat. The seagulls appear to be well used to the regular visits of the boats as the crew feed the birds by hand.

Teide National Park

Mount Teide is Europe's highest dormant volcano at over 12,000 feet high and is the highest point in Spanish territory. The narrow road that climbs through the Teide National Park rises through pinewood countryside and crosses an extensive crater some of which resembles a lunar landscape.

Cable cars take visitors to the peak, however the operation of this system is sometimes interrupted due to maintenance or windy conditions. The cable cars do not run if the wind is greater than 50mph and the service is non-operational about 90 days a year.

Playa de las Teresitas

To the north of the island's capital Santa Cruz is the picturesque beach of Playa de las Teresitas. The beach has natural golden sands set against a backdrop of palm trees.
